Directions from Deep
Creek Lake
In the fall we meet at the Weather Station Put-In near the dam of the Reservoir. It is about 20-25 minutes from Deep Creek Lake. All tours from September 2nd on Meet Here.
Turn on Glendale Road from Route 219. Depending on which direction you are travelling on Route 219 (Garrett Highway) will determne which way you turn. From the North Lake Area (Wisp) it would be a left turn. onto Glendale Road. Glendale Road is just south on Rte 219 from Arrowhead/Unos and the Movie Theater, Near MacDonalds at the traffic light.
Follow Glendale Road over the Glendale Bridge and bear right
staying on Glendale Rd. Follow for approx 3 miles to the right Turn Right at North Glade Road (there is a sign for the North Glade Inn at this corner, right is the only way you can turn) Turn on North Glade and follow for a few miles unitl it reaches a stop sign and intersection at Route 495. On this corner is the Anchor Mart. Go ACROSS 495 straight, onto Mellinger Road. Follow Mellinger Road for almost a mile until you reach a junction with the first paved road coming in sharply from the left. Take this paved left turn (Spring Lick Road - sign maybe missing?) and follow all the way down the mountain to the intersection with the Savage River Road, 4+ miles. Windy and narrow in spots.
At the stop sign junction with Savage River Road bear right onto Savage River Road and follow for one mile until you come to a chain link fence surrounding a weather station on your left. Take the immediate left turn into the drive just past and at the end of the fence. Cars with low clearance can park along the road up top, or park in the first spaces immedately on the left after turning. Suv's and trucks can take the right hand (rough) drive down a little further to the put in.
Directions from Pittsburgh
Follow I-79 to I-68 in Morgantown WV. Take I-68 East towards Cumberland
MD. Follow for 36 miles and Exit # 4 IN MARYLAND, the Friendsville
Exit. Follow route 42 south towards Deep Creek Lake. In 7 miles
42 merges with Route 219. Follow 219 south towards Deep Creek Lake.
Follow 219 over the lake and make the first right you come to at the
light, Glendale Rd (MacDonalds on right). Turn left off 219 onto
the Glendale Road. follow directions above.
Directions from Baltimore
and DC
Get on I-70 west from Baltimore or from Washington DC and I-270. Follow
70 west to Hagerstown and get on I-68 WEST towards Hancock and Cumberland
MD. Follow I-68 to Exit #19 (Grantsville Exit) and follow Route 495
south towards Swanton. Follow for APPROX 11-12 miles. You will go past
Rock Lodge Road on the right and the nin a few miles past the Western
Maryland 4-H Education Center and Pleasant Valley Rercreation Center on your right. Stay on 495
up over hill (Meadow Mountain) and down again and go past the turm to New Germany road on your left, keep following 495 past Glendale Road (road to Deep Creek Lake) and follow it until you see the Anchor Mart Store and North Glade Road on your Right and Melllinger on your left. Mellinger Road. Turn left on Mellinger Road for almost a mile until you reach a junction with the first paved road coming in sharply from the left. Take this paved left turn (Spring Lick Road - sign maybe missing?) and follow all the way from the top of the mountain down to the intersection with the Savage River Road, 4+ miles.
At the junction with Savage River Road bear right onto Savage River Road and follow for one mile until you come to a chain link fence surrounding a weather station on your left. Take the immediate left turn into the drive just past and at the end of the fence. Cars with low clearance can park along the road up top, or park in the first spaces immedately on the left after turning. Suv's and trucks can take the right hand (rough) drive down a little further to the put in.
If you are early and need to use the rest rooms turn left on Savage River Road, and follow for approx 4 miles to facilities on the right at Big Run State Park.
